Visa Processing


First of all to enter the country, you will need to possess a valid Visa. The Japanese Visa is called ‘Sasho’. The following documents are necessary for applying for a Visa:
  • Valid Passport
  • Form 1 C - Visa Application Form
  • 2 x 2 Photograph
  • Original and one photocopy of Certificate of eligibility called Zairyu Shikaku nintei someishu obtained from Immigration Bureau of Ministry of Justice in Japan.
  • Bank statements showing enough funds.
There are different types of Visas for entering to Japan. They are student visa, work visa, cultural activity visa and tourist visa. US citizens on a temporary visit to Japan do not need Visa for a stay of up to 90 days. The work visas are of 14 categories namely professor visa, artist visa, religious activity visa, journalist visa, investor or business manager visa, legal/accounting service visa, medical service visa, researches visa, instructor visa, engineer visa, humanities service or international services visa, intra-company transferee visa, entertainer visa and skilled labor visa.

Accommodation


Once you are thorough with visa processing, you need do sufficient research to find a place to stay. Finding a house in Japan is not an easy task. The cost of living in Japan is high.

The cost of shipment to Japan may be reasonable, but the cost of shipping goods home is high. Try to keep the shipment less to avoid paying high costs. On Arrival to Japan


On reaching Japan, you must be able to produce the necessary documents to the customs officer at the airport. Some of the papers that may be asked are passport of all the family members, visas, list of items carried with the total value of assets, list of items to be arriving etc.

Once settled you must apply for alien registration which is also called foreign resident registration. This is a must for all those who plan to stay above 90 days. You will need two photographs and your signature for applying for the registration. Once registered, you will get a foreign resident registration card with all your personal details. You must carry the card all the time you go out as you may be asked to show it anytime.

The majority of people in Japan speak Japanese. Hence on relocating to Japan, you must learn to speak Japanese. Find proper schools for your children. It may take time for children to adjust to the new environment.

Find out the shopping centers where you can shop for necessary items. You will find everything you need in the stores although the prices are high. Household items can be obtained at reasonable prices in recycle shops.
